Twilight Imperium (Fourth Edition) is a game of galactic conquest in which three to six players take on the role of one of the seventeen factions vying for galactic domination through military power, political maneuvering and economic negotiation. Each faction offers a completely different gameplay experience, from the emotionally-charged Ghosts of Creuss to the Emirates of Hacan, masters of trade and economics. These seventeen races offer many paths to victory, but only one can sit on the throne of Mecatol Rex as the new masters of the galaxy. No two games in Twilight Imperium will ever be the same. At the start of each galactic age, the game board is uniquely and strategically constructed using 51 galaxy tiles that include everything from lush new planets and supernovas to asteroid fields and gravity gaps. Players receive a handful of these tiles and take it in turns to create the galaxy around Mecatol Rex, the capital planet at the center of the board.
An ion storm can prevent your race from advancing through the galaxy, while a fortuitously placed gravity rift can protect you from your nearest enemies. The galaxy is yours to make and to rule. A game of Twilight Imperium begins when players select one of eight strategy cards that determine the player order and offer their owner a unique strategic action for that stage. These can do anything from providing additional command tokens to allowing a player to control trade across the galaxy. Once these roles have been selected, players move their fleets from system to system, claiming new planets for their empire, engaging in war and trading with other factions. At the end of a turn, players gather in a grand council to adopt new laws and agendas, moving the game in unpredictable ways. Once each player has passed his or her turn, players climb the victory point track by checking whether they have achieved objectives throughout the round and scoring them. Objectives are determined by setting up ten public objective cards at the start of each game, then progressively revealing them each turn. Each player also chooses between two random secret objectives at the start of the game, providing victory points that can only be achieved by the holder of that objective. These objectives can range from researching new technologies to taking over your neighbor's home system. At the end of each round, a player can claim one public and one secret objective. As the game continues, more and more objectives are revealed and more secret ones are distributed, giving players dynamically changing objectives throughout the match. The game continues until one player reaches ten victory points.
